Late-Stage Breast Cancer Diagnoses on the Rise in U.S.
Alarming new findings published on December 10th in Radiology show a significant increase in metastatic breast cancer diagnoses among U.S. women, especially impacting older women from racial and ethnic minority groups.
As potential reasons for this uptick, the researchers write that many of the women who were unable to get their annual mammograms during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic have not returned to receive their yearly exams. They added that the U.S. does not have standardized population-wide imaging and instead relies on opportunistic imaging, exacerbating the problem. Another possible cause they presented is a lack of imaging recommendations for older women, who are often told to stop their exams at age 75.
